Celebrating Book Week 2025

Errington Special Education Centre recently celebrated the much-anticipated Book Week 2025, a cherished event that brings the magic of books to life for students. This year's theme, "Book an Adventure," inspired a week filled with engaging activities, culminating in the beloved Book Week Parade.

Planning and Preparation

The journey began in Term 2, with key staff selecting a book to anchor the theme. This year, the universally adored "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" was chosen from the school's InitiaLit programme at the PreLit level, ensuring familiarity for all students. Eunah was released full-time to support with materials and resources, dedicating her own time to scout for creative ideas.

In Term 3, collaboration with Georgia and other leaders led to the development of activities and the creation of AAC boards to support language learning. Teachers received a comprehensive set of resources, including:

A laminated copy of the book for literacy lessons

A laminated AAC version of the book

An animated story from YouTube

An AAC invitation for parents

Laminated versions of the food featured in the story

The very hungry Caterpillar Platter

Book Week Highlights

The week was filled with excitement and engagement. On Thursday, real food items were delivered to classes on caterpillar plates, sparking immense interest among students. Staff noted unprecedented levels of engagement, with students trying new foods, although pickles were less popular compared to the universally loved chocolate cake. The sausage and the salami were vegan versions to accommodate all dietary needs.
